The cries of victims of sexual violence in Myanmar often go unheard.

The effects of militarization on women have been profoundly dismissed and as a result have contributed to a culture of victim blaming and silencing women so their private lives do not become blurred with public shame.

According to a report by Social Watch, militarization brings with it a sense of hyper masculinity which creates a political culture that marginalizes women. The military has the power to shape gender roles in Burmese society and construct masculinity as an equivalent of the military’s physical force. The visibility of the military, and the lack of women in it, reinforces the perception that women should take on submissive social roles.

Consequences of military rape and violence have led to poor governance, poverty and limited economic, social and health freedoms for victims which has also worsened the problem of gender inequality in Myanmar. What's worse than these atrocities happening is how many go unreported because of social stereotypes, legal corruption and financial barriers.
