On 1 July 2018, I contacted David Pekoske, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Transportation Security Administration’s seventh administrator in August 2017. David leads a workforce of approximately 60,000 employees, including the Federal Air Marshal Service, and is responsible for security operations at nearly 450 airports throughout the United States. I explained that I was concerned that the guidance on their website is incorrect and may cause confusion and serious medical consequences, specifically that “Passengers with portable infusion pumps, such as insulin pumps or glucose monitors in standard lanes can be screened by advanced imaging technology” and that “Disconnected devices may be screened by X-ray.” For clarification, I presented the current statements from the major pump manufacturers Medtronic and Roche. I requested that the TSA update their protocols to ensure that insulin pumps and CGM’s are not subject to x-ray screening or full-body airport scanners but instead be screened by hand search, supported by Trace Detection. I was pleased to receive a response directly from David Pekoske who said “Thanks, Rachel. I will review the information and our procedures and adjust as appropriate.” I have asked to be kept updated with the above. I hope this will be a step towards insulin pump users having a stress free and safe experience at airport security in the USA. See email: www.ufofreight.com/uploads/tsa-david-pekoske_1530456035.pdf
