In just 2 weeks, 3,500 people have now signed our petition calling on airport authorities to put in place a Standard Policy for Insulin Pumps at Airport Security.
I'm overwhelmed by the level of support that the campaign has received, not only in the UK but also Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Poland, Qatar, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UAE and USA.
I have been concentrating my efforts on contacting the people that can really make this change happen (rather than local newspapers etc.) and I am delighted to say that this approach is starting to work.
I am now speaking directly with Andrew Haines, Chief Executive of the Civil Aviation Authority and Declan Collier, Chair of the World Executive Committee of Airport Council International, which serves 592 members operating 1,853 airports in 173 countries.
They have both pledged assistance to my request that airport authorities recognise that insulin pumps should NOT go through x-ray machines or full-body airport scanners and should be subject to a wand inspection instead to test for traces of explosives and that failure to do so could swiftly cause medical consequences.
We already have support from JDRF and Diabetes.co.uk. This week, our campaign will also be promoted by the social media team at Diabetes.org.uk. We are definitely moving in the right direction but we need to keep the pressure on so please keep signing and sharing our petition.
I will of course keep you up-to-date with developments on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/insulinpumpnoxray
