Re-Open The AHS Library

Re-Open The AHS Library

Recently I came up with an idea whilst taking a makeup test in the library, My freshman year I’d always rely on the library to bring me comfort when I wasn’t feeling the best. The atmosphere in the library was always so welcoming and Ms.Marlene was always so nice to me when I spent my time there. I would check out books almost every week, it was what sparked my love for English class. I always looked forward to seeing the new books we’d get in and the second I saw them my name would be on the check out card. Being in the library for the first time since freshman year brought a bit of sadness upon me, seeing the place I spent my whole first year of highschool so empty and lifeless sparked an idea. Since the school doesn’t have many clubs that I feel I fit into, I've decided to bring the thought I'd come up with to you, students and parents. If other students feel like myself, as if we don’t fit into the clubs our school does offer, we could create one that is accessible to anyone and welcomes everyone.
The club I’ve had in mind is a library club. Since the school is short staffed and no longer has anyone to fill the librarian position I feel as if a group of students (preferably seniors) can uphold that position. I myself know I'm fully capable of filling in since I am done with my classes at 10:40. As I don’t have my license my mother comes to pick me up from school everyday and doing so she’s had to miss out on job opportunities that couldn’t fit picking me up into their schedule. So we’ve been trying to come up with a solution to fit both of our schedules, and I’ve talked to her and other parents and kids who have the same issues and we’ve all agreed that the library club is the perfect solution. Another benefit of reopening the library is for students that struggle mentally with their thoughts, who just need a secluded and safe environment to unwind and distract themselves with a healthy coping mechanism. As a student that struggles significantly with my thoughts I can vouch for some of the others, I mean, who doesn’t love to get lost in a book?
The ideas I and other students have come up with pertaining the library club include the following:
-Having 1-2 students fill in as librarian a day
-Becoming a safe place for students to respectfully enjoy
-Helping students to gain interests in reading
-Developing a stronger sense of responsibility
-Making new connections with new people
-Welcoming freshman into their new high school
-Being a place for students to enjoy during lunch
-Becoming a place for anxious students to feel safe
Thank you for listening and I hope this strikes your interests
