Aging Out Housing for Young Adults with Severe Autism

Aging Out Housing for Young Adults with Severe Autism

The Issue

Aging-out housing and day programs on Long Island are desperately needed for Long Island residents who have had to attend out-of-region residential schools for years due to severe autism needs. Our children are young adults now, and as screenings continue, we hear the same response "he needs too much support" and "we don't say 1:1." There is a large population of Long Island children who reside across New York State and have been displaced due to Long Islands' failures. This sounds like marginalization and oppressive practices. Are the needs of persons with severe autism population being forgotten? Are these needs less important than migrant housing? Funding streams need to be developed in the form of LOIs, (letters of Intent) from Governor Hochul, specifically for the severe autism community as well as for day programs. Severe Autism Needs Advocacy (SANA) NOW!!
