The Issue
Community Petition Against the Proposed St. Viator 2,000-Seat Multifield Sports Complex (Backyard Project)
Subject: Expressing Deep Concerns and Opposition to the Planned Sports Complex Development
To: Mayor Tinaglia and the Village Board of Trustees
We, the undersigned concerned residents of the surrounding community, respectfully submit this petition to formally oppose the proposed construction of a 2,000-seat, multifield sports complex in our neighborhood. While we fully recognize the value of physical activity and community sports, we firmly believe that the scale of the current plan introduces significant negative impacts that will permanently alter the character and livability of our residential neighborhood.
Key Concerns:
- Noise and Light Pollution: Large-scale sporting events inherently generate substantial noise and require high-intensity stadium lighting. This will severely disrupt the peace, quiet, and comfort of our residential area, particularly during evening hours and weekends.
- Traffic Congestion and Pedestrian Safety: The influx of visitors for major events will dramatically increase local traffic and strain available parking. This creates severe congestion and compromises safety for drivers, neighborhood pedestrians, and local children.
- Diminished Community Well-Being: Our neighborhood’s identity is defined by its tranquility, safety, and natural green spaces. Introducing a massive 2,000-seat complex directly conflicts with this residential character and will significantly reduce residents' enjoyment of their homes and environment.
- Lack of Genuine Community Consultation: Many nearby residents feel their voices and valid concerns have been entirely overlooked. A development of this magnitude should not proceed without earnest, transparent dialogue with the neighbors most directly affected.
- Declining Property Values: Operating a commercial-scale sports venue in the heart of a residential zone threatens to negatively impact local property values and alter the neighborhood dynamic.
- Environmental Impact: The construction and ongoing maintenance of a 20-acre sports complex will result in a significant loss of local green space, disrupt regional wildlife, and exacerbate soil erosion and stormwater runoff issues.of this matter.
Our Request
Denial of Ordinance Amendments: We respectfully request that the Village Board of Arlington Heights deny St. Viator’s requests for any zoning changes, variances, or amendments to the village ordinances that would permit the construction of the proposed sports complex.
Conclusion
We strongly urge the Village Board to consider the serious concerns of the surrounding community and thoroughly reevaluate the necessity, scale, and location of this project. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that any development within Arlington Heights prioritizes the well-being of its residents and preserves our shared neighborhood environment.
We sincerely appreciate your time, attention, and careful consideration of this matter, and we look forward to your formal response.
