African Lion Safari: Stop the abusive 'Elephant Round Up' show
The Issue
For decades, African Lion Safari has been a destination for Ontario families to see exotic animals in their 'natural' habitat - outside, roaming the land. Unfortunately African Lion Safari continues to promote shows that force their animals into unnatural behaviours taught through abusive training methods.
A 2013 protest by Grassroots Ontario Animal Liberation put a spotlight on African Lion Safari's use of bullhooks, which inflict pain on elephants' sensitive skin to coerce them into performing these tricks. Other training necessities include breaking their spirits to force them into submission, which is generally done by tying them up, starvation, or other forms of abuse. African Lion Safari's 'Elephant Round Up' show also includes trainers riding the elephants, something that has been repeatedly proven to be harmful to the animals' spines and detrimental to their health and well being.
African Lion Safari claims to "respect the land and the life it supports," yet their use of animals for entertainment purposes does not reflect this philosophy. Children visiting the park are learning that it is acceptable to use animals as entertainers for human enjoyment. This is not respect.
Demand that African Lion Safari owner James Dailley and president Mike Takacs take their animals' well being seriously and end the elephant shows immediately.
