Afghan Refugees in Pakistan: Expedite Humanitarian Visas & End the Crack down in Pakistan

The Issue

We, the undersigned, raise our voices in solidarity with the Afghan refugees living in Pakistan, who are facing unimaginable challenges, including a harsh government crackdown, and are awaiting humanitarian visas from countries such as Australia, Canada, the USA, the UK, and others. Their plight is a heartbreaking and urgent humanitarian crisis that demands immediate attention and action.

The Fall of Afghanistan:

As the world watched in horror, the Afghan government fell in August 2021, plunging the country into chaos and insecurity. In the midst of this turmoil, many Afghan allies, including interpreters, guides, and support staff, had no choice but to flee their homeland. They did so to escape threats, persecution, and violence due to their association with foreign forces, media outlets, NGOs, and international organizations.

A Life in Limbo:

These brave individuals, men, women, and children, found refuge in Pakistan, a neighboring country. However, their lives remain in limbo, characterized by uncertainty, danger, and lack of basic rights. Many are living without proper documentation, making them vulnerable to arrest, deportation, and exploitation. Families are separated, and children are growing up in an atmosphere of instability, devoid of access to education and healthcare.

Crackdown and Deportations:

Adding to their agony, the Pakistani government has initiated a harsh crackdown on Afghan refugees, resulting in arrests and deportations back to Afghanistan. This dire situation exposes them to an unknown and perilous future, compounding the suffering they have endured.

Discrimination and Racism:

Living in Pakistan as Afghan refugees, they face rampant discrimination, racism, and prejudice. They are often treated as outsiders, subjected to unfair treatment, and made to feel like second-class citizens. The psychological toll of living in perpetual fear, combined with systemic discrimination, is immeasurable, casting a long shadow over their mental and emotional well-being.

Awaiting Humanitarian Visas:

The promise of humanitarian visas from countries like Australia, Canada, the USA, and the UK offered hope to these Afghan refugees, who dream of rebuilding their lives and securing a future for their families. However, the visa application process has been plagued by delays, communication breakdowns, and unanswered queries. This prolonged uncertainty is taking a devastating toll on their mental and emotional well-being.

International Responsibility:

We firmly believe that the international community has a collective responsibility to act swiftly and decisively. The Afghan refugees in Pakistan are not just seeking refuge; they are seeking safety, dignity, and the chance to start anew. It is a responsibility shared by nations that pledged to assist these Afghan allies and those in need.

UNHCR, International Organizations, and Human Rights:

Despite being aware of these dire circumstances, UNHCR, international organizations, human rights bodies, and countries have not done enough to secure the rights of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, expedite their case processes, and get them out of this precarious situation as soon as possible.

Our Call to Action:

We urge the governments of Australia, Canada, the USA, the UK, and other nations to expedite the visa application process for Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Clear and transparent communication is essential to provide these individuals with the information they need to plan for their futures.

Additionally, we call upon the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), humanitarian organizations, and countries to take immediate and concerted action to protect and support Afghan refugees while their visa applications are being processed.

Time is of the essence, and each day that passes brings further uncertainty and suffering to these vulnerable individuals. Let us uphold the values of compassion and responsibility, ensuring that Afghan refugees are not left forgotten and abandoned in their hour of need.

Sign this petition to stand with Afghan refugees in Pakistan, demand swift action to expedite their humanitarian visas, end the crackdown, and ensure their safety, dignity, and opportunity for a better life. Together, we can make a difference and bring hope to those who have suffered for too long.
