Affordable Housing and Better Support for College Students in Daytona Beach

Affordable Housing and Better Support for College Students in Daytona Beach

The Issue

As students attending Daytona State College, we face numerous financial challenges that threaten our ability to succeed in our education and future careers. Many of us are burdened by the rising costs of tuition, housing, and living expenses, which force us to make difficult decisions that can derail our education. The lack of affordable housing options in Daytona Beach, coupled with limited financial assistance and community support, leaves students vulnerable to homelessness, financial instability, and mental health struggles.

Problem:

Unaffordable Housing: The cost of student housing in Daytona Beach has skyrocketed, making it nearly impossible for students to afford a safe and stable place to live while attending college. Many students are forced to live in inadequate conditions, commute long distances, or even face the threat of homelessness.
Lack of Financial Aid and Community Support: The current financial aid packages and community support programs are insufficient to meet the needs of students who are already disadvantaged by their socio-economic background. Many students, especially those from marginalized communities, are not receiving the help they need to cover basic living expenses.
Mental Health Impact: The financial pressure and instability caused by these issues severely affect students’ mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, and burnout. Students are left feeling hopeless, unsupported, and unable to reach their full potential.
Petition:

We, the undersigned, call on Daytona State College, local government officials, and community leaders to take immediate action to address the financial struggles of students in Daytona Beach by:

Expanding Affordable Housing Options: Partner with local developers and landlords to create more affordable housing options specifically for students. Establish rental assistance programs to help cover the costs of off-campus housing.
Increasing Financial Aid and Emergency Support: Improve access to financial aid and create emergency funds specifically designed to help students cover unexpected expenses like rent, utilities, and food.
Establishing Community Support Programs: Create programs that connect students with community resources, including food banks, mental health services, and financial counseling. Ensure these programs are widely advertised and easily accessible to all students.
Advocating for State and Federal Support: Lobby state and federal representatives to increase funding for student aid and affordable housing initiatives to directly support college students facing financial hardships.
Conclusion:

By signing this petition, you are standing up for students who are struggling to afford their education and basic living needs. Our goal is to create a supportive environment where all students have the opportunity to succeed without the constant worry of financial instability. Together, we can advocate for change and ensure a better future for students at Daytona State College and beyond.
