Advocating Fair Representation: Petition for Two Voters Per Household at Irvington Tennis

The Issue

Petition Two Voters Per Household

To the Board of Directors of the Irvington Tennis Club,

We, the undersigned members, respectfully request that the current voting policy be revised to allow two adult votes per household membership. This change ensures fair representation and acknowledges the individuality of each adult in our households.

Historical Context
In 1920, the United States made a historic stride toward equity when women gained the right to vote through the 19th Amendment, emphasizing the importance of fair representation.

The Irvington Tennis Club’s one-vote-per-household policy may have originated in a time when societal norms treated households as a single voice, often sidelining women’s perspectives. Today, with equity and individuality at the forefront of our values, it is time to revisit this outdated practice to ensure all adults in our community are fully represented.

The Case for Change
The current one-vote-per-household policy forces two adults to consolidate their potentially differing views into a single vote. Allowing two votes per household would ensure fair representation, respect individual perspectives, and reflect modern democratic principles.

Proposal
Amend the policy to grant each adult the ability to vote in the upcoming Board of Trustees election (up to two votes per household).

Logistics Plan
To implement this change, we present the following options to simplify the process and address potential concerns about feasibility:

  • Voting Registration:
Members could register or update their information to designate two adults for voting.
  • Email Collection:
Email all members to confirm and update email addresses for both adults in each membership household.
Ensure the club has accurate and complete email records to facilitate communication and voting access.
  • Transparency:
Share voting results with members after each election, similar to real-world elections, to maintain transparency and confidence in the process.

Conclusion
This change aligns with the club’s values of inclusion and progress. This needs to pass as soon as possible to ensure implementation for the upcoming Board of Trustees election. We urge the Board to consider this proposal and bring it forward for immediate consideration and approval.

Sincerely,

Members
