We, concerned individuals and healthcare professionals, are petitioning for the immediate reinstatement of the pediatric grand rounds titled “Healthcare Under Occupation: Palestinian Children and Their Unique Challenges,” which was recently canceled.

This lecture aimed to address severe health issues faced by Palestinian children under occupation, a topic that has gained significant legal validation from the recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories as unlawful. The program was intended to highlight critical humanitarian concerns and the impact on pediatric healthcare in a region suffering under challenging conditions.

Why This Matters:
Humanitarian Duty: Physicians and healthcare professionals have a fundamental duty to address and advocate for the health and well-being of vulnerable populations, regardless of political contexts. This program was a crucial opportunity to discuss urgent health issues affecting Palestinian children, aligning with our humanitarian responsibilities.  Additionally, the American Medical Association’s Code of Medical Ethics emphasizes the importance of addressing health issues impartially and based on evidence, without allowing political or ideological bias to hinder the delivery of care (American Medical Association, 2021).
Legal and Ethical Context: The ICJ ruling underscores the importance of addressing the humanitarian impact of occupation. Ignoring such a topic prevents a meaningful discussion on how to support affected communities and improve healthcare outcomes.
Academic Freedom: Censoring discussions on important health issues based on objections to terminology undermines academic freedom and prevents necessary conversations about critical health challenges.

1. Reinstate the Program: We urge the relevant authorities to reconsider and reinstate the canceled grand rounds. The content should be evaluated on its merit, focusing on its importance for healthcare and humanitarian understanding rather than political sensitivities.
2. Ensure Transparency: We call for transparency regarding the decision-making process behind the cancellation. Understanding the reasons will help ensure that future programs can address sensitive issues without undue controversy.
3. Support Open Dialogue: Advocate for an environment where critical health issues can be discussed openly and respectfully, without being hindered by political or ideological objections.
