Advocate for Vic Roads to Raise Speed Limit and Ease Traffic Bottlenecks on Sunbury Road
The issue
As someone who drives daily from Sunbury to Melbourne International Airport, the traffic congestion along Sunbury Road, particularly from Oaklands Road to the airport, is unbearable, causing significant delays and stress. This issue extends beyond a personal inconvenience, resonating with numerous others on the Northern side of Melbourne who also face this predicament.
Sunbury Road is the only major thoroughfare on our side of Melbourne, yet it fails to meet the traffic demands, especially during peak hours. In effect, this not only results in excessive travel time, but also contributes to increased fuel consumption and emissions. Reports indicate that traffic congestion costs Australia up to $25 billion per annum in lost productivity, of which Melbourne's roads contribute a significant portion (BITRE, 2019). By optimizing our roadways, we can mitigate this economic drain.
Our proposal is twofold. Firstly, we urge Vic Roads to increase the speed limit on Sunbury Road from 80km/hr to 100km/hr. Sunbury Road has no major intersections and basically only consists of paddocks and farming. If you compare it to Melton Highway or Springvale Road which has major intersections, schools and high density housing which enforces a speed limit of 80km, there is absolutely no reason for this low speed limit on to be enforced on Sunbury Road.
This adjustment should make commutes more efficient while still adhering to safe driving protocols. Secondly, on Oaklands Road to Melbourne International Airport as well as Tullamarine Freeway to Sunbury/Greenvale, we insist Vic Roads to investigate and implement effective traffic congestion solutions. This could be achieved through road-widening, addition of lanes instead of three lanes merging into one lane. Roads are meant to connect us, not hold us back.
We, the people of Sunbury and Northern Melbourne, call on Vic Roads to take swift action in addressing these pressing matters. Your signatures will push for a necessary change to improve our daily journeys and overall way of life. Sign this petition and share your support today.
