The Issue

We are urging Cinemark, specifically Cinemark Tinseltown Erie in Erie, Pa., to reconsider its curfew policy for its teenage customers. We are students in a course at McDowell Intermediate High School where we learned about the value of film in terms of entertainment, education, and art. With our newfound knowledge, we would like to be able to attend films in a theater with our friends any time of day without parental supervision. We learned that it is valuable to see movies on a big screen and believe that allowing teenagers into the theater in the evenings will also help Tinseltown's business now and in the future.

We respectfully request that the Cinemark Tinseltown Erie revise the age policy to permit students under 17 to be admitted for showtimes starting after 6 p.m. without a parent or legal guardian.

By signing this petition, we are also pledging to respect the movie theaters by refraining from vandalism, disorderly conduct, fighting, or doing anything that would prevent other customers from enjoying a film in the theater in the evenings.

Movie theaters are losing money since streaming has become so common, and teens have money to spend. Spending time at the movies is not only about entertainment, but it also serves as an essential bonding time that encourages teens to be social outside of smartphones.

According to an October 2024 article in the Los Angeles Times, a “Teens and Screens” report — which surveyed 1,500 young people across the U.S. ages 10 to 24 — identified going to see a film on opening weekend as adolescents’ No. 1 preferred pastime when cost, transportation and other barriers are removed from the equation. The article indicated that teens want to see films on the big screen.

Therefore, we call on Tinseltown to reconsider and revise this restrictive policy, enabling students to attend movies at night independently. Your signature can support students' right to enjoy cinematic experiences and, at the same time, uphold Tinseltown's inclusive and student-friendly brand reputation. Please sign this petition.
