Advocate for the Shetland Islands' Return to Norway

The Issue

Growing up in the Shetland Islands, I've always felt a deep connection to both the land and my heritage. As someone who is part Norwegian, the ties between the Shetlands and Norway are not just historical for me—they are personal, they are familial. My ancestors likely shared this very soil, living and thriving long before the political boundaries we see today were drawn.

The history between the Shetland and Norway dates back over a thousand years. The Norse influence is undeniable, with roots deeply embedded in our culture, language, and traditions. The islands were pledged as a dowry in 1469, which should have been a temporary measure, yet the transfer of sovereignty never officially reverted. This lack of formal transaction means that the islands' ownership has been in a state of limbo for centuries.

While the UK and Scottish governments administer the islands today, the cultural and ancestral lineage remains undeniable. The Norwegian government has never relinquished its historical connection to these territories, and the people living here often feel more culturally aligned with Norway than Britain.

Reviving these ties would not only honor our unique heritage but also respect the cultural and historical connections that have endured through generations. By returning the Shetland Islands to Norway, both the UK and Scottish governments would be acknowledging a shared history and fulfilling an ancient territorial agreement.

This petition asks you, the people of the world, to stand with those who have roots in these majestic islands. It seeks justice for a history left unsettled and paves the way for the cultural restoration of a community. Please sign this petition to urge the UK and Scottish governments to open deliberations for returning the Shetland Islands to Norway. Let us correct the course of history and honor our true heritage. if you sign you will help us go back home
