The Issue

Credit to Michael from Vsauce.

As someone deeply invested in the scientific community and space exploration, I believe it's time we address an issue that has been a source of unnecessary humor and distraction - the name of our seventh planet, Uranus. The name has often been ridiculed due to its pronunciation in English. This not only detracts from serious scientific discussions but also undermines the majesty and importance of this celestial body.

In ancient Roman mythology, Caelus was the god of the sky, equivalent to Uranus in Greek mythology. Renaming Uranus as Caelus would not only maintain historical continuity but also eliminate any unintended humor associated with its current name.

This is not about erasing history or disregarding established conventions. It's about fostering respect for our universe and ensuring that each celestial body is recognized for its significance rather than being reduced to a punchline.

Let us unite as a community passionate about astronomy and space exploration. Let us advocate for change that enhances our conversations around these topics rather than detracting from them.

Please sign this petition if you agree that it's time we rename Uranus to Caelus - honoring both scientific discovery and ancient mythologies alike.
