The Issue

Our beloved son Christopher Paul Sims was violently attacked in his apartment and succumbed to his injuries. Despite having emergency contact information listed on his Texas ID, law enforcement assumed his girlfriend was his common-law wife and never contacted us, his parents. This oversight robbed us of the opportunity to oversee his medical care and to be with him during his final moments.

This heartbreaking experience underlines a critical flaw in the current system that many other Texas families may unknowingly face. An amendment to the Texas Real ID Act of 2005, making it mandatory for law enforcement to check the emergency contacts listed on an individual’s Texas ID or driver license during medical emergencies, could prevent similar situations in the future.

Texas is increasingly experiencing unpredictable and severe weather events that pose significant risks to its citizens, making the need for proactive safety measures more urgent than ever. We are calling for a special Texas legislative session to discuss this amendment and ensure all Texans' safety and peace of mind. Such a measure is not just a bureaucratic adjustment; it is a step towards prioritizing human lives and familial bonds in times of crisis.

Our proposal is straightforward and impactful. It requires law enforcement officers to adhere to a protocol that checks for emergency contact information in a person's official identification during medical emergencies. This will ensure that the most appropriate and concerned relatives are informed promptly, potentially altering the outcomes for those in critical situations.

By implementing this change, Texas can lead the charge in creating a safer environment for its residents, making sure that families are united, informed, and able to make critical decisions when every second counts.

Support our call for a special legislative session to discuss this vital amendment. Let us turn our tragedy into an avenue for change that protects every Texan family. Sign this petition today and help us ensure no family has to suffer the same fate.
