Advocate for Salamanca Arts Centre's Recognition as a Tasmanian Icon

Advocate for Salamanca Arts Centre's Recognition as a Tasmanian Icon
The issue
Salamanca Arts Centre is an integral part of Tasmania's cultural landscape. This centre has been the heart and soul of our local arts community, providing a platform for artists to showcase their talent and creativity. However, despite its significant contribution to our culture and society, it is yet to receive formal recognition as a Tasmanian Icon.
The Tasmanian Icon program, established by former Premier Jim Bacon nearly 25 years ago, acknowledges organisations that hold a special place in the hearts and minds of Tasmanians. These organisations are deemed deserving of a level of certainty in government investment to fulfill their cultural missions. Salamanca Arts Centre, founded in the 1970s through the vision of dedicated artists and arts supporters, has since become a vital hub for creativity, innovation, and cultural exchange.
Despite its undeniable cultural and economic contributions, Salamanca Arts Centre operates without any state government funding in 2024. CEO Joe Bugden emphasises, "For decades, Salamanca Arts Centre has enriched the local arts community, driving economic growth and fostering creativity. It's time for the Tasmanian government to recognise and support our pivotal and iconic role."
Salamanca Arts Centre houses 60 individual artists, small to medium arts organisations, and art and design retail enterprises, providing employment opportunities for hundreds of Tasmanian creatives. Annually, it attracts over 300,000 visitors to its galleries, theatres, and community events, contributing significantly to the local economy.
According to Australia Council for the Arts data (2019), Tasmania has one of the highest rates of participation in arts and culture in Australia. This highlights how deeply ingrained art is in our society and underscores why institutions like Salamanca deserve recognition.
By signing this petition, you are not only supporting Salamanca but also standing up for all local artists who rely on such platforms to share their work with us all. Let us come together as a community to ensure that this icon can continue to enrich Tasmania's cultural landscape.
