Kilgore residents, 

With a rapidly increasing senior population, there emerges a need for more affordable senior housing. The current zoning laws restricting conversion of residential areas to commercial spaces are limiting progress in developing income-based senior housing. 

By 2050, it is projected that the population of individuals aged 65 and over will nearly double from 52 million in 2018 to 95 million (source: Census Bureau’s 2017 National Population Projections). This will escalate the demand for affordable housing for seniors. Coupled with the fact that many elderly people live on fixed incomes, the necessity for income-tailored senior housing is evident.

Rezoning residential areas for commercial use could pave the way for more income-based senior housing units. This effort would not only meet the growing demographic needs, but also foster socio-economic equity in our city by making housing affordable for the elderly who are most vulnerable  in.

We urge the city council to prioritize this issue and reevaluate the zoning laws. Your support can bring about a real difference in the lives of our older adults and contribute towards a more inclusive society.
