Advocate for Reduced Sentence for Harijinder Singh
Advocate for Reduced Sentence for Harijinder Singh
The Issue
Harijinder Singh, a member of the Punjabi community in Brampton, Ontario, deserves a fair chance at rehabilitation and reintegration into society. As someone deeply connected to our vibrant community, he has consistently demonstrated values of hard work, honesty, and dedication. However, due to certain circumstances, Harijinder found himself on the wrong side of the law.
Currently, he faces a lengthy prison sentence of more than 2-3 years. Many of us believe that such a long period of incarceration is excessive and not conducive to the rehabilitation process. Studies have shown that shorter sentences, focused on rehabilitation and community service, are more effective in preventing future offenses, especially for first-time or non-violent offenders.
According to the Statistics Canada, about two-thirds of people in Canadian correctional facilities are serving a sentence of less than two years, demonstrating the common practice of shorter sentences. Furthermore, Harijinder has shown remorse and a willingness to participate in programs that would allow him to positively contribute to society.
Advocating for a reduced sentence is not just about leniency; it's about justice and giving individuals the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and make amends. Punishing Harijinder with a long jail term could disrupt his life, his family, and his ability to contribute positively to our community.
We call on the judicial system to consider his past contributions, his remorse, and his commitment to change, by reducing his sentence to no more than 2-3 years. A decision like this would echo the values of fairness and compassion that we hold dear in Brampton.
Join us in signing this petition to support a just and fair decision for Harijinder Singh. Together, we can stand for a more compassionate justice system that recognizes the potential in every individual to be a positive force in our society. By adding your name, you are advocating for a system that doesn’t just punish, but also rehabilitates, rebuilds, and reintegrates individuals back into our community.
