The Issue

For those of us who suffer from conditions like PMDD, PCOS, and endometriosis, the monthly menstrual cycle comes with severe, debilitating symptoms that can make it incredibly challenging, if not impossible, to work. Personally, I experience PMDD and heavy menstrual bleeds, meaning there are 2-3 days each month where I simply cannot work. This exacerbates pre-existing feelings of guilt and dread, making me feel that capitalism and our current systems are failing to support women's health.

In our society, where employment rights should be upheld and everyone should feel supported by their workplace, menstrual health is still inadequately addressed. It's time to advocate for paid period leave: 1-3 days of paid, confidential leave per month for individuals with severe menstrual symptoms. Such a policy would not only protect employment rights, but it would also help in reducing the stigma associated with menstrual health issues.

Research supports the necessity of this initiative. According to the National Institutes of Health, conditions like endometriosis alone affect approximately 10% of women during their reproductive years. Similarly, PMDD impacts up to 5% of women who are in their childbearing age, causing severe mood disorders and physical pain. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists found that 1 in 10 women are unable to go to work due to severe menstrual symptoms. These statistics highlight the urgent need for systemic change to accommodate and support affected individuals effectively.

Currently, there are very few legislated protections for individuals suffering from severe menstrual symptoms. Without the option for confidential paid leave, many are left to struggle in silence, fearing that disclosing their condition will harm their employment prospects or yield judgment from colleagues.

Implementing a policy on paid period leave is not just about protecting those who suffer; it's about ensuring equality and dignity in the workplace. The stigmatization of menstrual health issues leads to increased absenteeism, decreased productivity, and diminished overall well-being for those affected.

By signing this petition, you are joining a call for action to employers and policymakers to rethink how they can truly support their employees' health. Together, we can push for a workplace environment that legitimizes and respects the menstrual health needs of those who suffer, so they no longer have to choose between their health and their job security. Sign the petition today to advocate for these essential rights and help reduce the stigma and strain associated with menstrual health issues.
