The Issue

Five years ago, my vibrant, independent daughter was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 25. The news marked the beginning of a journey fraught with disbelief and emotional turmoil. Before the diagnosis, my daughter was a young woman full of promise, energy, and a zest for life, always surrounded by family and friends. Today, we find ourselves caught in a system that feels cold and indifferent to the needs of individuals like her and families like ours.

Our mental health system is profoundly flawed and offers little support to families dealing with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. Funding cuts have crippled resources that were once a lifeline for people in dire need. As a result, many individuals and their families are left to navigate this challenging landscape alone, with inadequate support and guidance from the very systems that were created to help them.

The reality is harrowing. Families like mine, who are willing to do everything in their power to help their loved ones, often find themselves at a dead end, hindered by bureaucratic red tape and lack of support. Our loved ones, in turn, are robbed of the opportunity to live fulfilling lives because the infrastructure meant to support them is deficient or outright nonexistent.

We call on lawmakers to take immediate action to address this crisis. It's imperative that new laws are enacted to better support families and individuals dealing with severe mental health issues. Critical funding must be reinstated to revive essential services and programs. This isn't just about my daughter; it's about the countless others who are being failed by a broken system.
