Advocate for laws and reinforce existing laws that help protect forests
The Issue
To: Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change
Forests are one of the most important ecosystems on the planet and we need to protect them immediately, because otherwise the climate crisis will continue to get out of hand. Forests are important for many reasons such as they can absorb CO2, but the main reason is that it’s the habitat for many wildlife species. For a forest to be biodiverse they need to have a wide range of tree, plant and animal species, this is something that Canada does have with “over 80,000 species that have been classified” (Blair 2024).
But over the past 44 years from 1978 to 2022, the number of endangered species has risen fast from 17 to 841, “this is partly due to the faster loss of habitat” (Blair 2024). If this continues, a lot of these animals will go from near extinction to extinction, and we will slowly start to lose the biodiversity that we currently have.
That is why we the citizens of Canada call upon you Steven Guilbeault the minister of environment and climate change to help us enforce existing anti-logging laws, as well as advocate for public policy that protects forests and the wildlife that lives there. These actions will not only save the countless wildlife species that are at risk of extinction now and in the future, but it will also help future generations to have the opportunity to witness these amazing trees, plants and animals in their natural habitat where they belong.
