As a 17-year-old Indo-Caribbean youth living in Mississauga, it's disheartening to see our vibrant community underrepresented at Celebration Square. Our culture, deeply rooted in rich history, colorful traditions, and exquisite cuisines, deserves its moment to shine just like other communities in the region. While Brampton hosts Guyanese and Indo-Caribbean events celebrating our unique heritage, Mississauga has virtually nothing dedicated to showcasing our culture at its splendid Celebration Square. This exclusion leaves many of us feeling disconnected from our cultural roots and marginalized within the broader community.

Indo-Caribbean events are more than just gatherings; they are platforms for cultural expression, solidarity, and pride, necessary for the Indo-Caribbean community in Mississauga . We draw inspiration from Brampton and aspire to have similar events here, allowing us to celebrate our identity and share it proudly with our fellow residents.

Hosting these events would not only enrich the cultural fabric of Mississauga but also promote inclusivity and diversity across the Peel Region. These events can include festivals featuring our traditional music, dance, and culinary delights, as well as  special guests that delve into our historical journeys and contributions. The city has the resources and capacity to make this a reality, and it is time we bring forth the vibrant tapestry of the Indo-Caribbean culture to the heart of Mississauga.

We call on Mississauga City officials and the Celebration Square management to recognize and address this cultural gap. By supporting the organization of Indo-Caribbean events, they can foster a greater sense of belonging and community among all residents.
