I am writing to express my concerns over the proposed high on-street parking charges in Bengaluru. As someone who earns around ₹35,000 per month and travels approximately 15 km each way from Ullal to my workplace in Jayanagar, I find this policy unjust and burdensome. With no convenient public transportation option for my daily route—forcing me to change buses multiple times—commuting by two-wheeler is the most practical choice. However, these proposed charges threaten to significantly increase my monthly expenses, making it difficult to balance other essential costs.

The current infrastructure in Bengaluru simply does not support such a drastic increase in parking fees. Most of us rely heavily on personal vehicles due to the limited availability and connectivity of public transportation. Imposing steep parking fees without first improving alternative transport solutions is inequitable and will disproportionately affect working and middle-class citizens.

We propose that before any such parking charges are levied, the Government of Karnataka and the Greater Bengaluru Authority prioritize infrastructure development. Specifically, expanding public transport networks, providing more affordable parking facilities, and ensuring that residential and commercial areas are adequately equipped with necessary parking spaces are essential steps. This way, residents will have realistic alternatives to relying on personal vehicles.

Bengaluru is already experiencing significant congestion and pollution problems. A balanced approach that focuses on developing efficient public transport systems and pragmatic parking solutions can help alleviate these issues while supporting the needs of its citizens. Other global cities have successfully implemented solutions by integrating transition periods, infrastructural improvements, and thoughtful urban planning policies that can be a reference for our city.

We call upon the authorities to engage in dialogues with residents, consider practical transport and parking solutions, and ensure that any steps taken are in the best interest of all stakeholders involved.
