As a Mexican and LGBTQ+ student, I have endured repeated instances of racism and homophobia within the walls of Cashmere High School. Furthermore, I have observed numerous episodes of blatant racism and witnessed teachers who choose to look the other way. We are in a school environment where educators feel comfortable using offensive slurs such as the n-word when reading aloud to students. Instances where students exhibiting pride in their Mexican heritage by wearing Mexican flags have been told to remove them. Students speaking Spanish have been ordered to switch to English because they are in America. Such instances signal a systemic problem of racism and the devaluing of our diverse cultures that we must address.

Our petition aims to address the rampant racism and marginalization of students of color and reinforce the need for cultural representation and respect. More specifically, it seeks to bring increased attention and educational focus to events such as Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Pride Month. These commemorations are essential in promoting cultural diversity, understanding, and mutual respect.

Nationally, one in four students report being a victim of racial or ethnic prejudice in a typical school year (Southern Poverty Law Center, 2017). This emphasizes the urgency for schools like ours to take firm steps to ensure all students feel safe and respected.

We cannot foster an encouraging learning environment if some students are being marginalized due to their race, ethnicity, language, or sexual orientation. It is time for our school to reflect the diversity of America – where every student, regardless of their background, feels valued, included and empowered to learn.

We call upon the administration of Cashmere High School to recognize and confront the inherent racism within its walls and take immediate steps towards the creation of an inclusive and respectful learning environment.
