My granddaughter, a highly intelligent young mind, is currently trapped in an educational system that does not cater to her needs. She has high functioning autism and thrives academically when given the right environment. However, the current state of secondary education in Scotland fails her and many others like her. Instead of being nurtured in her potential, she is relegated to an ASN hub without the vital interaction of face-to-face teaching, receiving only worksheets that are inadequate for her learning style and capabilities.

This is not just about my granddaughter; it's a systemic issue affecting countless young people across Scotland. These students, capable and intelligent, are shut out of the mainstream educational system due to an inability to handle the sensory overload of crowded, noisy corridors and classrooms. Their condition, not their intellectual capacity, is the barrier to accessing the quality education they deserve.

Current educational facilities do not adequately support students with high functioning autism. They require  small class sizes and quiet spaces to  meet their unique needs and allow them to flourish alongside their peers. The lack of such tailored resources means that they miss out on personal teaching experiences, critical social interactions, and the full breadth of a comprehensive education.

The Scottish government must act now to create more inclusive educational facilities that cater to the diverse needs of all students. We propose developing specialised programs and small class sizes outwith schools, hiring trained staff who understand the nuances of autism, and designing tailored curriculums that provide both academic challenge and sensory consideration for students who need it.

By addressing this issue, we can unlock the potential of a generation of autistic students. This is not only a moral responsibility but an investment in the future. Every child deserves the chance to reach their fullest potential, and every student deserves an education that embraces their individuality.
