Advocate for Companion Pets Inclusion in Aged Care Facilities

The issue

I have personally witnessed the profound impact that pets can have on the elderly. The joy, comfort, and companionship they provide are invaluable, especially for those who lack regular visits from friends or family. Yet many seniors face the heart-wrenching decision to part with their beloved pets when they move into aged care facilities. This is a situation that needs to change. Often their pet is the only reason people have to get up each day and to face the prospect of losing the companionship, love and unique relationship they share with their precious pet is devastating.  My own Mum did not wish to contemplate going in to assisted  living until such time as her cat passed away.

In South Australia, SA Health's ageing well strategy for the next five years acknowledges this issue and aims to improve it. However, we need more concrete action now. Allowing residents to bring their companion pets into aged care facilities would significantly enhance their quality of life.

Research supports this claim; a study published in Gerontologist found that interaction with pets can reduce loneliness among elderly people (Gerontologist, 2019). Our newly established pet support service, Purrpetuall Pet Services can provide practical solutions to support pet care within these facilities and assist facilities develop the necessary policies and procedures to ensure the success of a pet cohabitation model.

We urge aged care facilities across South Australia to consider revising their care models to allow residents to live with their companion pets. It's time we prioritise emotional wellbeing as much as physical health in our approach towards eldercare.

Please sign this petition if you believe in creating a more compassionate environment for our seniors where they don't have to leave behind an integral part of their lives – their cherished pets.

The photo used for this petition is in honour and tribute to Betty - a lovely and elegant lady who looked forward to our weekly pet therapy visits at her aged care facility.  It was a joy and a pleasure to visit and chat with Betty each week and our heartfelt condolences are with Betty's family - as she passed away last week.
