The Issue

Having lived and worked in Downtown Ellijay, Georgia, I've seen firsthand how vital it is for employees like myself to have access to affordable, accessible, and affirming parking spaces. Unfortunately, a growing issue has emerged in our picturesque small town: most of the parking has been taken over by private organizations that are transforming them into for-profit pay-to-park lots. This situation not only affects the daily lives of those working in Downtown Ellijay but also tarnishes the spirit of our cohesive community that depends on each other to thrive.

Downtown Ellijay is known for its unique shops, historic charm, and vibrant culture, all of which are maintained by the dedicated employees working tirelessly behind the scenes. Without reasonable parking options, these employees are forced to bear additional costs, making it increasingly difficult to sustain their livelihoods. These parking costs add up quickly, especially for those working hourly jobs, and cut into their earnings significantly.

We are not asking for special treatment; what we seek is a fair solution that allows employees to park without excessive financial strain. There are viable alternatives to transform this challenge into an opportunity:

1. Collaborate with local businesses and community organizations to establish designated employee parking areas with affordable rates.
2. Partner with the Ellijay city council to explore subsidization options or financial incentives for parking providers who offer employee discounts.
3. Implement a permit system for employees, granting them access to discounted or free parking spaces during working hours.

To make these changes actionable, it will require collaboration between local government, business owners, and community members. We believe with a collective effort, we can create a more supportive environment for Downtown Ellijay employees, and preserve the essence of our beloved small town.

Please join me in advocating for this crucial change by signing this petition. Your signature will voice the demand for affordable, accessible, and supportive parking solutions. Let's work together to ensure Downtown Ellijay remains a thriving community where both businesses and employees can flourish.
