Advocate for a public sensory gym in Wichita
The Issue
As a mother of a child with autism and sensory needs, I witness daily the challenges in finding safe, accessible indoor spaces for play and development in Wichita, Kansas. For families like mine, the lack of suitable environments is a constant struggle, making it tough to support our children's needs fully. My child, like many others in our community, thrives in sensory-friendly spaces where they can stimulate their senses in a calming and supportive environment.
Imagine a place designed specifically for kids with sensory needs—a public sensory gym equipped with all the necessary tools to support their development. Such a facility would include specialized equipment such as swings, climbing structures, sensory bins, and more. It would not only serve as a safe haven for the children but also offer parents a community where they can connect, share experiences, and support each other.
Currently, families in Wichita must often travel great distances to access these vital resources or make do with makeshift solutions, which are not always effective or safe. According to the CDC, one in 54 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. This statistic indicates the growing need for inclusive spaces that cater to the sensory and developmental needs of these children.
In cities where public sensory gyms exist, communities have seen significant positive impacts—improvements in children's social skills, reductions in anxiety, and increases in community involvement among families. Wichita deserves to be such a community.
We call on city planners, local government, and community leaders to prioritize the creation of a public sensory gym here in Wichita. By investing in the construction and maintenance of such a facility, Wichita can become a leader in inclusivity and support for children with special needs.
Please join me in advocating for our children’s right to safe and accessible play spaces. Sign this petition to show your support and make Wichita a model city for inclusivity and child development. Together, we can make a difference for our children and future generations. Sign now to support our cause and advocate for this much-needed change in our community.
