The current state of our electoral system is deeply personal to me, and I believe it should be to everyone who values democracy. The First Past The Post (FPTP) system, which has been governing our elections, is significantly flawed and does not reflect the true wishes of the electorate. Had we employed Proportional Representation (PR) during the 2024 General Election, we would have seen a starkly different political landscape. Labour would have had 175 fewer seats, whereas parties like Reform, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Green Party and others would have had increased seats, commensurate to the votes each party received.

PR is a system where the seats allocated in the parliament accurately mirror the votes cast. Our current system, FPTP, results in millions of votes being ineffectual, leading to disillusionment among voters which in turn has resulted in the lowest voter turnout in 23 years in the recent 2024 General Election. We haven’t had a single party government the majority voted for since the 1930s. 

We need an electoral system which encourages citizens to participate because they understand their vote counts and can make a real difference. A switch to Proportional Representation would invigorate our electoral system, promoting democracy and fairness, and potentially preventing super majorities. We must hold our government accountable for giving power back to the voters by implementing an electoral system that accurately represents the people's will.
