The Issue

Working at an animal hospital has opened my eyes to a heartbreaking reality in Joplin, Missouri, one that most people never have to see. Oftentimes, I look into the eyes of animals who have been starved, beaten, abandoned, or left to suffer in silence. Some come in trembling with fear. Some are in unbearable pain. And some don’t make it at all. These are not isolated cases. This is happening far too often.

Our community saw this cruelty firsthand in the story of a dog named Snoop. He was abandoned, left starving and helpless, suffering from severe neglect with no way to save himself. By the time he was found, the damage had already been done. Despite efforts to help him, Snoop did not survive.
Those responsible were charged with animal abuse, but for many in our community, it still doesn’t feel like justice matches the suffering he endured. And that is the problem.

Snoop’s story is heartbreaking, but it is not unique. It is a painful reflection of what so many animals endure behind closed doors, unseen and unheard.

What makes this even more devastating is knowing that, in many cases like his, the consequences are not strong enough to truly hold abusers accountable or prevent it from happening again. Laws exist, but without stronger penalties and decisive action, they fail to protect the very lives they were written for. Animals cannot speak for themselves. They rely on us to be their voice and right now, we are failing them.

This is not just about animal welfare. It is about the kind of state we choose to be. Research has shown a clear link between animal abuse and violence against people. When cruelty is ignored or treated lightly, it doesn’t just end with animals. It escalates.

That is why we are calling on Missouri state representatives to take meaningful action. We need stronger laws. We need tougher penalties. We need legislation that treats animal cruelty as the serious, violent offense that it is. Abusers should not be given repeated chances to harm. There must be real consequences that protect the vulnerable and deter future cruelty.

Do it for Snoop. Do it for every animal still suffering in silence.

Imagine a world where animals like Snoop never have to endure that kind of pain. Where neglect is stopped before it turns deadly. Where those who cause harm are held fully accountable.

We have the power to make that world a reality, but only if we demand change.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for the voiceless. You are saying that cruelty has no place in Missouri. You are helping protect animals who cannot protect themselves.

Please, don’t look away.
