The Issue

Growing up in Fort Worth, I often found myself feeling lost and overwhelmed while trying to understand subjects in school. It wasn't until later that I realized my confusion stemmed not from a lack of ability, but from the traditional grading system itself. This traditional method is fraught with subjectivity and the potential for undue stress, leaving many students like me feeling unmotivated and alienated.

The Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) has a unique opportunity to transform the educational experience for all its students by implementing standards-based grading (SBG). Unlike traditional letter grading, SBG provides a clearer picture of students' strengths and areas for improvement by assessing their mastery of specific skills and learning objectives. This method emphasizes learning over ranking, helping students to develop a clearer understanding without the threat of competition-induced anxiety.

Research has shown that standards-based grading promotes a growth mindset, increases student accountability, and provides meaningful feedback to students and parents, enabling them to take an active role in the educational journey. SBG focuses on preparing students for a rapidly changing world.

Implementing standards-based grading district-wide in FWISD would not only modernize our education system but ensure that every student receives fair and equitable opportunities to succeed. This change requires a concerted effort from educators, administrators, and the community at large, but the long-term benefits make it a valuable initiative.

Join me in urging the Fort Worth Independent School District to embrace this progressive step forward. Sign this petition to advocate for our students' success, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and confidence necessary to thrive in the real world.
