The Issue

UPDATED DESCRIPTION!!!

As a Muslim student in Frisco ISD, the ability to carry out our mandatory Friday group prayers, known as Jum'uah, has been unjustly compromised due to a recently implemented district policy. Each Friday, my peers and I at Centennial, Heritage, Independence, Reedy, and Wakeland walk into school knowing we are forced into a situation that makes us miss our prayers, an act which is deeply troubling and heartbreakingly consequential to our faith. For practicing Muslims, missing three consecutive Jum'uahs without a valid excuse is detrimental, as it could potentially remove us from the religion. This isn't a matter of convenience; it's a cornerstone of our faith that we are devoted to uphold consistently and reverently.

Currently, the district is citing the 90% attendance rule to justify this restriction, yet the actual time Jum'uah requires is a mere 0.9% of our instructional time. It's hard to reconcile how such a fractional portion of the academic schedule can be perceived as a disruption. Instead, this compromise infringes on our religious practices and rights, undermining the diversity that such a culturally vibrant district values.

By adopting Senate Bill 11 (SB11), Frisco ISD would allow us, along with consenting non-Muslim students, a dedicated daily period for prayer. This would include both the Dhuhr and Jum'uah prayers, offering a balanced solution that accommodates religious observances without compromising educational responsibilities.

Not only does adopting SB11 provide a feasible resolution to this urgent issue, but it also reinforces Frisco ISD's commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their religious background. Frisco ISD has always championed diversity and inclusion, and this step would be a profound affirmation of those principles.

We urge Frisco ISD to revise its policy and adopt SB11, ensuring that religious rights are respected and students are not inadvertently forced into conflicts with their faith. Your signature today could help restore the joy and sanctity of prayer in the lives of many students like me, bringing us peace of mind and a sense of belonging in our school community once more.

Please support us in this pivotal change and affirm Frisco ISD’s dedication to inclusivity by signing this petition. Stand with us as we seek a just and practical solution that honors and respects the religious obligations of all its students.
