Adopt Savanna’s Law in Mississippi
The Issue
As a survivor of domestic violence, I know firsthand the fear and trauma that comes with being in an abusive relationship. It is a difficult and dangerous situation that too many individuals find themselves in, often without warning. It is a painful reality that is unfortunately shared by countless others. In Mississippi, we have an opportunity to change this narrative by implementing "Savanna’s Law," inspired by the tragic murder of Deputy Savanna Puckett, whose life was taken by her ex-boyfriend in January 2022. Savanna Puckett's story is one of heartbreak, and it serves as a stark reminder of the dire consequences of unchecked domestic violence.
Recently, Tennessee took a significant step forward in the fight against domestic violence by passing "Savanna’s Law." This law establishes a public domestic violence registry for repeat offenders, aiming to provide victims with the information they need to protect themselves. By adopting this critical piece of legislation, Mississippi can enhance public safety, increase offender accountability, and prevent future acts of violence.
The creation of a public domestic violence registry means that repeat domestic violence offenders will no longer be able to hide their past. It offers transparency to those at risk and equips law enforcement with the tools necessary to intervene before a tragedy like Savanna Puckett's can occur again. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, an estimated 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. The statistics are undeniably alarming and demand urgent action.
Mississippi must prioritize the safety of its citizens by adopting "Savanna’s Law." This law is not just a protective measure, it is a statement that Mississippi will no longer tolerate the cycle of abuse that has harmed so many. By bringing offender histories to light, we can work to break down the silence and stigma surrounding domestic violence and foster a culture that protects and empowers survivors.
