On the first day of this school year, 84 girls at Providence High School were penalized for their attire. By the second day, before the second period even began, another 30 girls had also received sanctions due to the incredibly strict school dress code. These young women were forced to miss potentially vital educational moments to wait for their parents to deliver what the school deemed 'proper clothing'. This ongoing situation is holding back the female students' education. It is not just rigid, but displays patently sexist implications that we must no longer tolerate. Disruptive dress code issues are prevalent across the USA; the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) reports that these policies often disproportionately target female students. Hence, we are calling on Providence High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, to adopt a less restrictive, fair, and equitable dress code that will uphold every student's dignity and right to education. Our daughters, our sisters, our friends deserve an education environment free from discrimination. Now is the time to modify and enforce a practical dress code for Providence High School.
