The issue

Football has been an integral part of my life ever since my days at the College of Physical Education at the University of Baghdad. Over the years, I've marveled at how smaller national teams have stood toe-to-toe with football giants, often ending in a hard-fought draw. Yet, these gallant endeavors by the underdogs seem to be overshadowed by the current unfair points distribution system.

When a lower-ranked national team manages to draw against a far superior opponent, it is nothing short of a defensive miracle. These teams should be rewarded for their extraordinary efforts in achieving what many would deem impossible. In stark contrast, when a higher-ranked team fails to triumph over a weaker side, it begs the question: should they really be deserving of the same reward? Currently, both teams walk away with just one point each in cases of a draw.

It's time for a change. Under my proposed system, in the event of a draw, the lower-ranked team should receive 2 points as a reward for their valiant display, while the higher-ranked team should receive just 1 point. Victories, whether secured by a stronger or weaker side, should continue to be valued at 3 points, as usual.

This fairer distribution acknowledges the unique achievements of smaller teams and motivates bigger teams to strive for victory, maintaining the competitive spirit and excitement of the game.

I urge FIFA and its Competitions Committee to consider and implement this system in their regulations for international matches. This change would not only bring about fairness but also encourage smaller teams to push even harder, knowing that their efforts to secure a draw against formidable opponents will be justly rewarded.

Support this cause, and let's transform the football landscape for the better. Sign this petition to have FIFA adopt the proposed fair points system for national team matches. Together, we can champion fairness and reward the courage of smaller teams on the international stage.
