Adjust school policy for forgotten IDs

The Issue

Throughout the academic year, I have maintained a clean record, consistently bringing my student ID to school every day. Unfortunately, on one occasion, I accidentally left my ID at home. The current school policy dictates an immediate in-school suspension for even a single occurrence of forgetting one’s ID. This overbearing consequence left me in a state of panic and fear, leading me to make the misguided decision to use someone else’s ID, an action rooted more in anxiety than intent to deceive.

I admit my mistake, recognizing that honesty is paramount. However, the inflexible nature of this policy doesn’t account for human error, especially among students who are still growing and learning. Just as adults sometimes forget their wallets or keys, students too have moments of forgetfulness. Such harsh penalties for a single oversight seem disproportionate and emotionally taxing on students, creating an environment of anxiety rather than one of support and learning.

We propose a more balanced approach to this issue: a three-strike policy on forgotten IDs. This system would grant two warnings before any significant disciplinary action is enacted. It not only acknowledges the necessity for some level of discipline but also offers leniency to those typically responsible students who occasionally falter. By implementing this change, the school can still hold chronic offenders accountable while not unduly punishing those who generally adhere to the rules.

The current policy might have been set with good intentions of promoting responsibility; however, it inadvertently penalizes those who are usually compliant, creating undue stress and possible academic repercussions for singular lapses. Adopting a three-strike approach aligns more closely with educational goals of understanding, patience, and guidance, rather than instilling fear of immediate punishment.

Let’s advocate for a more reasonable and empathetic policy change that supports student growth and fosters a supportive educational environment. Sign this petition to request a review and amendment of the school policy regarding forgotten student IDs to a three-strike system.
