Living in Lac La Biche, Alberta, comes with its unique set of challenges, particularly the higher cost of living in this beautiful yet remote part of Canada. Despite being considered part of the northern municipalities of Alberta, Lac La Biche is not currently eligible for the Northern Living Allowance (NLA), an oversight that places considerable financial strain on its residents.

The Northern Living Allowance is designed to offset the extra expenses associated with living in remote northern regions, such as higher transportation costs, increased utilities, and the scarcity of affordable goods and services. Residents of Lac La Biche face these challenges daily, yet they do not receive the benefits that nearby areas do.

Statistics Canada points out that the cost of living in northern parts of Alberta is markedly higher compared to other regions. According to recent surveys, groceries are about 20% more expensive, and utility bills rise substantially during the harsh winters. For many families, these increased costs are unsustainable and impact their quality of life.

Moreover, the economic benefits the region provides cannot be overlooked—Lac La Biche is home to valuable natural resources, contributing significantly to the provincial economy. It is only fair that the residents who support this economic activity are not penalized with a higher cost of living.

By rezoning Lac La Biche to be eligible for the Northern Living Allowance, the government can provide much-needed financial relief to its residents, allowing them to continue contributing to the community and the economy.

We call on the Alberta government to reevaluate the eligibility criteria for the Northern Living Allowance and include Lac La Biche in its purview. This change will ensure a fairer system and provide equitable financial support where it is critically needed.
