Adjust houstone school's end time to 3:20PM

The Issue

I'm reaching out to make a change that affects many students like myself at Houstone School in Houghton Regis. Currently, our school day doesn't end until 4:00 PM. This extended day is primarily due to the inclusion of "PREP" time, where we are expected to complete our homework at school. This has become incredibly frustrating for several reasons.

Firstly, being in school until 4:00 PM leaves little to no time for students like me to pursue extracurricular interests, relax, or spend quality time with family after school hours. It feels like we're being treated as if we're still in primary school, ignoring the fact that at our age, independence and time management are essential skills we should be developing.

Moreover, the school enforces unnecessary practices such as ruler reading and keeping planners in the air, which to many of us, seem outdated and ineffective. These activities contribute to a school environment that doesn't foster autonomy or motivation, treating secondary school students as though we are incapable of making our own decisions and managing our schedules effectively.

Homework, as the name suggests, is intended to be completed at home, allowing students to manage their time and responsibilities in a manner that prepares us for the real world. Ending the school day earlier would give us the opportunity to engage in meaningful activities that contribute to our growth outside the classroom.

I propose that Houstone School revises the school day to end between 3:00 PM and 3:20 PM. This change would not only respect our time and foster independence among students but also recognize the importance of a balanced life between education and other personal interests.

Please consider signing this petition to advocate for an adjustment in the school schedule that will ultimately benefit the students' well-being and academic success. Your support can make a significant difference in achieving a more balanced school day for all students at Houstone School.
