Adjust Hoopster’s Basketball Start Date to Reduce 7-Week Overlap with Softball & Baseball

Adjust Hoopster’s Basketball Start Date to Reduce 7-Week Overlap with Softball & Baseball
The Issue
As a family deeply engaged in our local sports community, we appreciate the opportunities that multiple sports provide for our children to grow, learn, and thrive. However, the current scheduling of Eureka's youth basketball program, Hoopsters, poses significant challenges. With the basketball season overlapping with both softball and baseball, families like ours face tough decisions and logistical hurdles. In Eureka there are 4 separate softball & baseball leagues that conflict in the 3rd-6th grade age bracket.
Imagine this: a Saturday morning where my child has both a basketball and a softball game scheduled, and we are forced to choose between the two because of overlapping game times. This is not just an inconvenience; it's a barrier to participation and enjoyment in organized sports, denying our kids the full experience they deserve. As a coach juggling multiple sports, I find it increasingly difficult to provide the best support to my teams when pre-season softball activities overlap with critical basketball games.
Currently, there is about a month of overlapping games between the Hoopsters basketball season and the softball & baseball season. A total of seven weeks of practices and pre season activities that overlap. This overlap means that coaches, families, and players are stretched thin trying to meet the demands of both schedules. It's simply unrealistic and unfair to expect young athletes who are eager to participate in multiple sports to face this dilemma every year.
A simple adjustment—a shift in the start date of the Hoopsters basketball season—could alleviate these conflicts. By starting earlier, we can ensure that the basketball season concludes before the beginning of the baseball and softball seasons. Other cities have already adopted such schedules, successfully balancing multiple sports and maximizing participation.
We urge the City of Eureka and the administrators of the Hoopsters program to consider this change. Other communities have demonstrated that this adjustment is not only feasible but beneficial, encouraging wider participation in all sports. Let's make it easier for our young athletes to pursue their passions without having to compromise between sports.
Please sign this petition to request the City of Eureka to reschedule the start date for the youth basketball season, ensuring that all our children can have a fuller and more fulfilling sports experience.
