Addressing the Housing Crisis

Addressing the Housing Crisis
The Issue
We are Master of Social Work students currently enrolled in the Community Social Policy class. We are writing to bring attention to a pressing issue that affects many individuals and families in our community. Given the ongoing economic challenges, such as rising inflation and the increasing costs of goods and services, many families and individuals find it difficult to meet their basic living needs. There is a critical need to expand the availability of affordable housing units across Texas. According to the Texas Affiliation of Affordable Housing Providers, almost half of Texans spend more than 30% of their income on housing costs. Addressing the increasing need for affordable housing ensures all community members have a dignified place to call home. The most economical way to lower childhood poverty and boost economic mobility in the US is to increase access to affordable housing, according to research. Furthermore, kids who live in secure, reasonably priced households are more likely to do well academically and have more learning opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom.
The Low Income Housing Coalition states that the lack of affordable housing costs the U.S. economy around $2 trillion annually in lost wages and productivity. The absence of affordable housing limits families' ability to increase their earnings, resulting in slower GDP growth. Researchers estimate that GDP growth between 1964 and 2009 would have been 13.5% higher if families had greater access to affordable housing, leading to a $1.7 trillion increase in income or an additional $8,775 in wages per worker. Furthermore, every dollar invested in affordable housing stimulates local economies by leveraging public and private resources to generate income, including resident earnings and increased local tax revenue, and supports job creation and retention. Advocating for policies and initiatives that prioritize affordable housing can create a more equitable and resilient community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the answer to addressing the housing issue includes providing additional rental assistance while also providing more housing units. The Center reported that housing costs increased though incomes did not during the COVID pandemic. Housing vouchers can increase a person’s choices of where to live as well as the person being able to experience the immediate impact of lessening the financial burden of rent. These vouchers also assist with keeping the housing costs under control due to caps imposed on rent. Providing subsidies to landlords that are willing to accept the vouchers can also create additional housing options. In addition to increased vouchers, making purchasing a home more affordable and incentivizing tax credit programs can help housing become more affordable.
Additional approaches to affordable housing by the Center on Budget and Priorities, is to preserve the affordable housing that currently exists and expand funding. Investments in these programs can greatly benefit those that are facing housing insecurity. Direct allocation of funding to support these programs can assist with strengthening these programs that provide rental assistance.
