Address verbal abuse from Doctors to Patients in GP surgeries

The Issue

I have experienced firsthand the devastating effects of sudden verbal abuse from a female doctor in a local NHS GP surgery whilst under care - it was completely unacceptable and frightening to witness.

NHS premises have all policies up on display/walls, websites etc in surgeries/hospitals about zero tolerance against NHS staff members regards abuse but who protects the patient within a hidden consult room from abuse?

There can be no witnesses making it harder to be believed or taken seriously.

A female GP systematically engaged in increasing coercive control over a duration, finalising in verbal abuse, making what should have been a safe space feel threatening and uncomfortable.

Subtle at first.  Sometimes you cannot see what is happening to you.

Not widely recognised and dismissed by the surgery.  LGBTQ related issue.

Unfortunately, my story is not unique. Many patients have suffered in silence, feeling trapped and powerless against those meant to care for them.  But this is where you come in - you can prevent another be subjected to it simply by speaking up.

Sometimes people in healthcare do not understand what verbal abuse is; the impact on the recipient nor what systematic wearing down can do to a vulnerable patient.

Verbal abuse can take many forms, including shouting, belittling remarks, and manipulation - the object is to silence/control an unsuspecting victim.

These actions can have lasting psychological effects on patients, eroding their trust in the medical community and discouraging them from seeking necessary medical care.

It is an unequal power dynamic - hidden within a clinical context.

This will happen again if unaddressed.

Maybe you have been verbally abused yourself or know someone who has - you can play a vital role.

This petition calls for immediate action to address the verbal abuse of patients by doctors in GP surgeries across the UK/globally.

The National Health Service (NHS) must implement mandatory training for all healthcare professionals/staff to recognize, prevent verbal abuse within GP surgeries from Doctors to patients; to identify potential/or bullying members of staff (likely to engage in it) and to ensure reports are made about these individuals to the regulatory bodies, management, social services, wider NHS and relevant outside independent/national organisations trained in abuse so that it doesn't happen again.

Furthermore, there needs to be a clear and accessible reporting system for patients to report incidents of verbal abuse without fear of retribution.  Reporting internally may not be an option for fear of retaliation. But you must report it.  The name of the perpretator, dates; times; exactly what was said, needs documenting.

If you feel you are not being heard, escalate it outside the surgery.  Act.

Pay attention to policies and educate yourself within the care system for all steps you can take - use Google for sources/help.

Training for GPs should focus on communication skills, empathy, and strategies for managing conflicts without resorting to harmful language.  However there is no excuse for it and could indicate deeper psychological issues within the individual.

According to a study published by the Journal of General Internal Medicine, over 55% of patients have experienced misconduct or abuse from healthcare professionals. This is an alarming statistic that highlights the urgent need for reform.

By signing this petition, you are not only demanding improved accountability and training for doctors but also standing up for the right of every patient to receive compassionate and respectful care.

No one should have to endure the emotional/psychological strain and aftermath of verbal abuse when seeking medical help.  Let's create a healthcare environment where empathy and communication are prioritized.

Please sign and share this petition to ensure safer, more respectful GP visits for all patients.

Never give up.
