Address Transgender Discrimination in Harrison County Schools

The Issue

As a gay African-American man living in Harrison County, I have witnessed firsthand the discrimination faced by transgender students within our school district. Many of my friends, hardworking and caring individuals who identify as trans or choose to live their lives as gender fluid, are treated as less than their peers due to their gender identity. This is not just an issue of fairness; it's a matter of human rights.

Transgender students across the country face higher rates of bullying and harassment than their cisgender peers. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, 75% of transgender youth feel unsafe at school. In Harrison County, these statistics are reflected in the experiences shared by our community members.

Our schools should be safe spaces where all students can learn without fear or prejudice. It's time for us to hold our district accountable for its actions and demand justice for transgender students.

We call on the Harrison County School District to address this discrimination directly and work towards creating an inclusive environment that respects all identities. By doing so, we can ensure that no student is left behind because of who they are.

Please sign this petition if you believe in equal rights and protections for every student regardless of gender identity.

Before you depart, please consider the following: If one were subjected to beratement, harassment, or feelings of unsafety in an environment where they are required to remain for four years, wouldn't it be reasonable to seek change? It is not academic performance or gang-related activities that prompt students to discontinue their education, but rather instances of bullying and being marginalized. Every individual deserves equal opportunities and a fair chance at success.
