Address Traffic Safety on Local Residential Roads
The Issue
If you could, please take the time to read and support this ongoing effort to change the habits of Zucksville Road for the betterment and welfare of our neighbors, children and their safety. Thank you.
I live in a neighborhood where state road Zucksville Road, in Forks Township, cuts through, bringing with it heavy and fast-moving traffic. This road has become notorious for speeding vehicles, creating an increasingly dangerous environment for residents, pedestrians, and cyclists. The risk is particularly acute at the two pedestrian crosswalks that are devoid of any warning signage.
There are NO businesses on this road, only residential homes, most of which face the road, with some homes’ backyards facing. Unfortunately, the speed limit starts at 45 mph near the Bushkill Drive entrance onto Zucksville Road. Eventually, after a few warning signs (a drop in speed limit) for curves in the road, the speed limit then changes to 35 mph, but this limit is limitless.
Traffic has increased significantly in recent years, as have the average speeds of drivers. Without speed monitors or traffic calming measures, this situation is a ticking time bomb, putting lives at risk every day. Living in a community where children often play outside and families enjoy walking, the lack of traffic regulation feels like an overlooked hazard.
Implementing effective traffic calming strategies is not just about maintaining the livability of our community, it's about safeguarding lives. Installing speed monitors, setting clear signage, and reducing the speed limit are actionable steps that can make a difference.
There are numerous examples of similar localities successfully curbing speeding issues through the use of speed cameras and enhanced road signage. According to the Federal Highway Administration, installing these measures has been shown to reduce crashes by up to 30%.
I'm calling upon local authorities to take immediate action. Our neighborhood deserves to be a safe place for everyone. We need your support to make this a priority. Please sign this petition to urge the relevant authorities to implement these necessary changes and protect our community.
