The Issue

Despite Canada having around 7% of the world's renewable freshwater, a disturbing number of Indigenous communities lack access to clean and safe drinking water. This issue is a violation of basic human rights and a troubling demonstration of inequality, affecting hundreds of Indigenous communities across the nation. The purpose of this petition is to urge the Canadian government to take immediate, thorough action to address the water crisis affecting Indigenous communities in Canada.

Indigenous communities like Grassy Narrows, Attawapiskat, and Neskantaga have been suffering from water advisories, some for over multiple decades.
As of 2021, there were 81 long-term drinking water advisories in effect in more than 50 Indigenous communities. These advisories prevent communities from accessing safe water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, leading to bad health effects, including waterborne illnesses, skin diseases, and more severe long-term health problems.

The government has made promises to resolve these issues, but has consistently failed to meet deadlines and commitments. This is unacceptable. We need real solutions, including significant investments in water infrastructure, regular maintenance, and monitoring systems meeting the unique needs of each community. Clear reporting and accountable actions must be established to ensure sustainable progress.

In addressing this issue, not only are we recognizing the rights and dignity of our Indigenous peoples, but we are also making an effort towards reconciliation. This crisis represents a more general inequality that must be addressed if we aim to achieve true equality and justice for all Canadians.

We are asking the Canadian government to prioritize access to clean water for Indigenous communities by enforcing and fully funding action plans that guarantee safe drinking water for all communities. Please sign this petition to demand accountability and to ensure that every individual in Canada has the fundamental right to clean and safe drinking water.
