Address the safety and sanitation issues at local homeless encampments

The Issue

Running a business in an area surrounded by homeless encampments comes with unique challenges. While we understand the plight of those experiencing homelessness, the encampments near our Black-owned businesses present significant safety and sanitation concerns. These encampments, found along the trail, are often littered with bottles, trash, and marked by open fires. This creates an unwelcoming environment for everyone who visits the area, including our valued customers. Furthermore, reports of multiple deaths at these camp sites heighten the urgency of addressing the situation.

The presence of these encampments has directly impacted our ability to operate safely and effectively. Customers have voiced their fears and discomfort, decreasing foot traffic and harming local business livelihoods. In addition, the sanitation issues pose health risks not only to those living in these encampments but also to the surrounding community.

Our goal is not to displace individuals experiencing homelessness, but to work towards a solution that ensures their safety and dignity, while also protecting the businesses and communities that surround them. We urge local authorities to take immediate measures to increase safety, improve sanitation, and provide support for individuals in these encampments.

Concrete actions could include increased waste management services, the establishment of designated safe zones with access to necessary resources, and enhanced collaboration with local organizations that specialize in providing support services to the homeless. Additionally, increased police or community patrols could help ensure that all members of the community feel secure.

We call on the community and local officials to address these pressing issues holistically and with empathy, recognizing the humanity of every individual involved. By signing this petition, you are supporting a safer, cleaner, and more welcoming environment for all. Let’s come together to create positive change and support both our local businesses and our homeless community members.
