The Issue

It's a typical weekday evening in Waterval, Grootvlei, Vastfontein, Whallmanstall, and Rooiwal, communities in Tshwane. Just as dinner preparations begin, appliances abruptly halt, lights flicker out, and homes are plunged into darkness. For the residents here, this scene has become a distressing routine, with constant power outages disrupting daily life.

Imagine living in a place where electricity is as unreliable as the wind. We spend days without power, hindered by a lack of communication and planning from authorities on when the power might be restored. Businesses lose revenue, schoolwork gets stalled, and essential household chores remain undone. It's a new form of crisis that affects livelihoods and well-being, sparking frustration and a call for action.

The frequent power cuts mostly affect vulnerable populations—the elderly relying on electric medical devices, children trying to do their homework by candlelight, or small businesses that can't function without power. The toll is heavy and grows daily.

To address this, we must urge the local government and Eskom to take immediate responsible actions. Firstly, an open communication line to timely inform residents about scheduled outages and restoration plans is crucial. Further, an audit of the existing infrastructure should be conducted with the aim of identifying systemic issues leading to these frequent blackouts.

Eskom should invest in upgrading the existing grid infrastructure, ensuring reliable and stable supply. Furthermore, renewable energy options can be explored to supplement the grid, making the region less reliant on a single power source and more resilient against outages.

Let us unify our voices and demand these changes. The time for suffering in silence is over. Stand with us and call for the reform of power supply practices in Tshwane. Sign this petition to bring about the change needed in our communities.
