The Issue

The overcrowding crisis at Walmer High School has reached alarming levels, and it's impacting the future of our children, our community, and our collective wellbeing. For years, we have waited for a change that was promised—a new school to alleviate the overcrowding and provide a conducive learning environment for all students. That promise came to us in 2014, and nearly a decade later, Walmer High School remains overcrowded and under strain.

Imagine a classroom where over 50 students are cramped into a space designed for 30. This is the reality for learners at Walmer High School, a situation that is far from optimal for fostering education and personal growth. Teachers are overwhelmed, resources are stretched thin, and learners are unable to fully harness their potential in such conditions. Our community deserves better. Our children deserve better. Education is a fundamental right, and the current situation fails to uphold that principle.

The overcrowding not only impedes academic performance but also poses safety risks. Inadequate space hinders effective emergency evacuations, and the cramped conditions make it difficult to maintain a healthy environment. Such an environment is neither conducive to learning nor does it uphold the standards of safety and dignity every student deserves.

The solution has been made clear since 2014: a new school that meets the demands of our growing community. Yet, bureaucratic delays and inaction have left our children waiting for a better future that seems perpetually out of reach. It is time for the promises to be fulfilled, for the plans to be drawn up, and for the groundwork to be laid to deliver the educational facility our community desperately needs.

We call upon the Department of Education, local authorities, and all relevant stakeholders to prioritize the construction of the new school without further delay. This is not only a call for facilities but a call for fair access to quality education. Investment in education is an investment in the future of our entire community.

Join us in this vital cause to ensure our children have the learning environment they deserve. Sign this petition to demand action now and make a positive change that will uplift our community and empower our children for a brighter future. Together, we can hold the powers accountable and ensure that the promises made in 2014 are finally met. Sign and share to amplify our cause.
