Address the impact of off leash dogs and commercial dog walking at Thornton State Park
The Issue
Years ago, I fell in love with Thornton State Park's pristine wilderness and diverse wildlife. It was my sanctuary, a place where nature thrived harmoniously. However, recent changes have threatened this precious ecosystem that I hold dear. The surge of commercial dog walking activities in the area has shattered the tranquility that once defined our park and neighborhood.
These commercial dog walkers often manage large packs of dogs, ranging from 6 to an astonishing 20 per person, violating the existing laws designed to protect our community and environment. The Max Law in Daly City requires no more than two dogs per walker, while other regulations mandate that dogs remain leashed and owners clean up their waste. Sadly, these rules are frequently disregarded, causing significant disruption. I have witnessed firsthand how these unleashed dogs have become a menace, not only to the resident wildlife but also to the community itself. As they roam freely, they block streets, intimidating elders and frightening families with children.
Thornton State Park's delicate ecosystem is at serious risk. The relentless presence of uncontrolled dogs around our peaceful Olympic Way cul-de-sac has displaced wildlife, driving them away from their natural habitat. This influx of dogs and their waste not only harms the animals but also leads to polluted landscapes, threatening the biodiversity that is crucial for the park’s balance.
It's imperative that we take immediate action to address this escalating issue. We must urge the local authorities to strictly enforce the existing laws regarding dog walking while considering implementing additional measures such as a permit system limiting the number of dog walkers allowed in the park at any given time. Regular patrols could ensure compliance with leash and waste cleaning rules, preserving our community and the park’s natural beauty.
Our community depends on Thornton State Park not only for its beauty but for the environmental benefits it provides, enhancing our quality of life. We must protect it. Please join me in calling for strong enforcement of all off leash dogs at Thornton State Park and Beach and the two dog max law in Daly City for the commercial dog walking enterprises and help restore peace and safety to both our beloved park and neighborhood.
