Address the cost of living crisis in NYC
The Issue
The intent of this petition is to urge the leaders of NYC to take more control of the cost of living in our city. New York City is the best city in the world, but the cost of living is getting out of hand. Everyday New Yorkers are struggling to keep up, and I'm here today writing this petition from personal experience and what I've witnessed. Rent is rising, groceries prices are rising, and simple transportation costs like taking the MTA train to work adds up fast. We want NYC to strengthen rent control, lower bus and subway fares, put an end to corruption and put more protection against any loopholes to keep costs high to put money back in the pockets of the one percent. In the last 25 years the cost of living across the five boroughs has gone up about 88% while incomes have only increased around 71%. That 17% gap means a lot of people are falling behind just trying to pay for necessities like rent, food , and transportation. This isn't right and we need to bring awareness to this situation so that our essential workers and future citizens have a place they can afford to live in and have enough money to keep up with the neighborhood they've lived in their whole lives.
